Joel is typical of young men – sociable with a great sense of humour and a love of computers, plus a fierce desire to be independent. Where Joel differs is that he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when he was just 11 months old.
Joel’s condition was deemed to be so severe that his parents were told that he would probably never walk or talk. Hour upon hour of therapy over the years together with the input of special needs education led to Joel being able to undertake further education, pass many exams and receive two awards for outstanding achievement.
As Joel grew and matured his parents became increasingly worried about how they would ever be able to satisfy his growing desire to lead an independent life. Then they heard about Aztec House, one of Jewish Blind & Disabled’s developments in Redbridge.
Following a meeting with Jewish Blind & Disabled, Joel was offered an apartment and moved in gradually until both he and his parents were confident that he could indeed manage in his own ‘bachelor pad’.
